The text at the beginning seems to describe an old Roman inscription. Although some letters are unclear, it likely refers to a dedication connected to Hercules and to the health and safety of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. Such inscriptions were common in Roman times and were often placed on stone monuments or altars as a sign of respect to gods or emperors Roman Inscription and Ancient Objects.

In the same area, many Roman coins made of copper and silver were also found. These coins show that the region had strong Roman influence in the past. I also brought away a gold medal of Emperor Trajan, which was a valuable and important discovery. Trajan was a famous ruler known for expanding the Roman Empire, so finding a gold medal of his is a sign that the place had historical importance.

Journey to Klagenfurt (Ancient Claudia)

From there, we travelled to Klagenfurt, which was called Claudia in ancient times. Today it is the chief town of the region of Carinthia. The town is beautiful and well planned. It is shaped like a square and is surrounded by a strong and handsome wall. The ramparts are very wide, and there is a bastion at each corner and also one in the middle of each curtain wall.

The streets are straight and regular, and the buildings follow a uniform design. In the center of the town there is a very fine square, or piazza, which adds to the beauty of the place. Much of the town’s beauty is said to come from the hard work of the Lutherans when they controlled the country Turkey Private Tours.

The Piazza, Fountain, and the Dragon Statue

The central piazza is decorated with a marble column and a statue of the Virgin. There is also a statue of the Emperor. However, the most remarkable feature is the grand fountain in the middle. On top of the fountain stands a large and impressive dragon carved from a single stone. In front of it is a figure of Hercules holding a club, as if ready to strike the beast.

The local people believe that this statue represents a hero who once killed a dragon in this region. The stone used for the statue was brought from the field of Saal, which was mentioned earlier in the journey.

Notable Fountains in the Region

There are three very notable and massive fountains in these hilly regions. The first two are located in St. Veit and Klagenfurt, and the third is a beautiful fountain made of white marble in Salzburg. These fountains are admired not only for their size but also for their artistic design and strong construction.

An Old and Strange Custom of Carinthia

Among the unusual customs of Carinthia, there is an old tradition connected to justice. It is said that if a man was strongly suspected of theft, he was hanged first. After three days, the people would judge the case. If he was found guilty, his body was left hanging until it decayed. If he was judged innocent, his body was taken down, buried at public expense, and prayers were said for his soul. This custom shows how harsh and different legal practices were in earlier times.

Soldiers and Hospitality in the Town

At the time of my visit, Klagenfurt was full of soldiers. I had the honour of seeing Count Hejley, the chief commander, as well as Baron la Hay and my Lord Peajly, who had a company stationed in the town. Their kindness and polite behaviour towards me were remarkable. They showed me great civility and favour, and I remain very thankful for their generous treatment and hospitality during my stay.
